zune / ipod?
I have an ipod... i hate it.
I don't like the fact that the ipod only works with itunes, plus i keep accidentilaly deleteing all mp3 files when i link to a pc. (bad feature on itunes).
Anyway question. Can you link a zune to a pc/mac without any software and tranfser files in the same way as you would an external harddrive. This is an excellent feature I had on my old mp3, not shared on the ipod.
Thanks all for your answers. Why don't these companies jus tmake it simple so that it is like an external harddrive you link it up and instantly you can drag and drop what you want. apple and microsoft you guys can eat my shorts.

  Okay I don't know but you don't have to use iTunes with your iPod, I used to use a microsoft music thing. I think the Zune is great though, I've tried at got used to it in an instant. Honestly I'd switch my iPod nano for a Zune any day,

  here is how you remove music (or any other media type) from your zune.

  1) connect your zune to your computer.

  2)open your zune program if it doesn't open automatically.

  3)find your devices name and locate the type of file(s) you wish to delete.

  4)Right click on the song or picture or video and select "delete" from the drop down menu.

  5) Presto!! It is gone from your zune.

  You can not delete a song without being hooked up to your computer.

How can I use both a Zune & iPod together? And,how can I found out how/where each store their libraries?
I have both and I don't want one to "take over" my music library and convert the file types etc. I've converted all my CDs to mp3s to be flexible. Now I want each; the Zune, and the iPod to be able to draw from that library without stepping on each other and/or converting all the files to "their" format.

  Both Zune and iPods can use the MP3 file format. I own a Zune while my sisters and mother own iPods, and when i bought a Zune a year ago i had the same question. If both the files on iTunes and Zune are MP3 they will not convert.

  Apple uses a ACC file format by default, so what you will need to do for iTunes is go to preferences and change the rip settings so that all music that you put on the computer by ripping CD's is MP3 and not ACC.

  Zune uses WMA file format by default, iPods cant play this it WILL be converted, so to prevent this go to to the settings in the Zune software and set the rip to MP3, so if you were to rip CD's from the Zune software it wont be ripped as WMA.

  Now both libraries by default should be under:

  -My Documents

  -My Music

  -and then under either Zune or iTunes

  Last to use one library instead of two, you will have to go the Zune software. And then go to settings on the upper left of the screen. After that go to the Collection tab, and then under the MONITORED FOLDERS sign, you should see this sign that says MUSIC and next to it a button that says: ADD FOLDER. Click it and when the window comes up, go to My documents/My Music/iTunes and then iTunes music or iTunes libraries. Click on the one that has your iTunes music and hit OK. After that all your music on iTunes will show on the Zune software.

  Now go back to settings, and back to the COLLECTIONS tab. Then scroll down past the MONITORED FOLDERS to the bottom where it says: ZUNE FOLDERS. There u will click CHANGE FOLDER and when the window comes up. Go to My documents/My Music/iTunes and then iTunes music or iTunes libraries. Click on the folder that has all your iTunes music and hit ok. After that all music ripped on the Zune program will go show on iTunes.

  This might seem very complicated, but its the only way to combine two libraries using iTunes and Zune

  Yes, as a matter of fact, I too am traveling to Southern Europe in about 30 days.

  I recently purchased a third-party power adapter, and it works fine for charging anything with the correct type of USB port built in. The type that Zune, iPod and most digital cameras use is USB A, or USB type A. That is the standard/normal, so any product advertising that it has a USB port in it should work just perfectly.

  Make sure, though, that it has a power converter in it, too. Some people make the mistake of just buying miniature plugs with AC outlets in 1 side as the negative, and the foreign plug's positive on the other side. These are cheaper and much smaller, but they WILL destroy the device you are trying to use, because the frequency of electricity coming out of sockets in Australia, UK, EU and almost everywhere else is different from the United States, with about twice the voltage. Usually the ones that do convert power must use a transformer or converter of some type, to make the voltage less, and compatible with your device, so just make sure that everything works before heading overseas without the proper equiptment!

You just don't go to iTunes and download music, you have to get the CD first and rip it onto the ipod. As far as I know, anyway. Does anyone know if you can download music off iTunes for the Zune ipod? And if so how?

  The music you purchase from the iTunes Store does NOT have DRM, so you can convert it to MP3 so that it will work on your Zune. Here's how:

  1. In iTunes, from the "Edit" menu, choose "Preferences".
  2. Click the "Import Settings" button (near the middle of the screen).
  3. Change Import Using to "MP3 Encoder".
  4. If the Setting isn't already 160 kbps or 192, select one of them.
  5. Click the "OK" button, then "OK" again.
  6. Right-click on a song you want to play on your Zune.
  7. From the menu that appears, choose "Create MP3 Version".

  The MP3 that it creates will work on your Zune. If it says the file is encrypted and cannot be converted, then it was purchased from iTunes long before everything went to iTunes Plus (which doesn't have DRM). In that case, any of the ones that won't convert should be burned to CD and re-imported, or by using another method that's offered here.

  Here's why I chose a Zune over an iPod:

  1. Nice design - Both are very nice looking, but I think the Zune is better. It's different, yet cool, and the iPod Classic has too much of a utilitarian look to it, and isn't as inviting.

  2. Hardware - Definitely Zune. The brushed aluminum backside is really scratch free (Apple uses the other scratch-prone aluminum back). The plastic front of the Zune has a nice solid texture. The Zune has a BIGGER glass screen. Makes video viewing great.

  3. UI - The user interface on the Zune is much more better and intuitive. The iPod Classic still uses that menu system where you have to keep "digging" in and out to get where you want. Zune one ups it by making it very easy to find what you want in one category, and gets you back to the home screen faster.

  4. Customizability - You can change the background of the menu(easy to identify and looks cool), get your Zune a nickname (you have to register, and hope noone else took it), get special laser engraving at Zune Originals ( https://zuneoriginals.net/ ), cases, accessories, and the usual.

  8. Store - iTunes does have more content, I'll admit. But the offerings on Zune aren't bad. Popular artists have special pages and it looks really neat to browse through. Finding content is much more easier for me. You can also access the store on your device.

  9. Zune Pass - This is an optional way of getting music from the store. Instead of traditionally buying music, you can RENT music for .99 a month. You have access to almost all of the store's music tracks, and you can download as many tunes as you want onto your device. After a month, you do have to pay .99 to keep your subscription running, or else your songs don't work. But it's a great legal way to get tons of music, for a rather cheap price.If that's not your thing, each song cost 79 points each (99 cents).

  I would go for the Zune. It has a bigger screen, better sound quality, FM radio, and wireless syncing, sharing, and buying of songs. MS is also good about releasing free firmware updates to the older Zunes so it will always be up to date with the latest generation. The iPod has a longer battery but that's because the Zune's screen is twice as big and burns through the battery. The only reason you may want to stick with the iPod is because you already have all of your content in iTunes.

  1. Download them using a program like voobys, Real Player, etc.
  2. Convert them to wmv with a resolution no larger than 320x240. I find that file format less problematic then mpeg-4.
  3. Put the converted files in whatever folder you have Zune monitoring for videos. By default, Zune monitors the My Videos folder.
  4. Zune will look in the monitored folders for compatible files and import them into the Zune program.
  5. Syncyour Zune.

  No, I have tried a lot of these and they don't work. However, you can still play the zune on it using the wire that comes with the dock (it plugs into the zune headphone) you just can't charge it there unless you plug it in too.

  Yes the Zune HD does have an internet browser....it is very basic and doesn't have the options (tabbed browsing) that the ipod touch does, but it is easy to navigate with pinch to zoom, and it is pretty quick. it gets the job done for email and forum browsing.

  I don't have any experience with Zune, so I don't know what audio codec the Zune Marketplace uses, but you should be able to use a simple audio converter to convert them to .mp3 or .aac. A good converter for this is "dBpoweramp Music Converter." Its shareware, but there's a 21 day trial, which is plenty of time to convert all your music.

  Again, I don't know if it is, but if music purchased at Zune Marketplace is protected with DRM (digital rights management) then you'll have to strip the protection off, using a program such as (not limited to) Tunebite Platinum. Or you can go the cheap route and burn your music to an mp3 cd, then rip it to your itunes library. This will also strip the DRM off. Do a google search on how to "strip off drm" and you can find lots more info.

  Hope this works for you, or at least gives you a good idea of what you have to do.

  Personally I can't imagine being impressed by video on a 3-4" screen, no matter what player.

  Audio, you can get much higher quality audio by using lossless compression and decent IEMs. But here's the thing. Good quality costs money. Cowon players are some of the best quality out there. For IEMs, Westone, Ultimate Ears, and Etymotics are the best.

  Sorry this is so long but you should read it through, a lot of reasons why Zunes are the better player.

  Zunes have more features. they are cheaper. Updates make it so your "old" Zune is exactly like a new Zune. There are games out for it. it has an FM tuner that also displays what song is playing on the radio (if the station broadcasts that info) and when this happens you can add that song to your cart and buy it the next time you sync with your computer (or buy it at that exact moment if you are in a wireless hotspot) then there is the Zune pass which will allow you to Download and keep as many tracks as you want for .99/month. as long as you keep paying the you can keep all the tracks, but if you decide to stop you will loose them all, however they allow you to select and keep 10 tracks forever every month. the software is better looking and customizable. you can select any pic on your Zune to be your background. the headphones that come with it are much better than the apple ones. they are hard to scratch (unlike ipods) they have a glass screen which is very hard to scratch/break (also unlike ipods)....you can sync your media wirelessly so you can charge your Zune at work and leave the cable there, and still be able to sync your new music while you are at home. you can also share your music with other players, take the music off your friends players and put it on your computer by reverse syncing (they will still keep all their tracks) you can also wirelessly share music/pics/movies. however they will only be able to listen to the track 3 times then it is gone (this may change some time soon)
  overall it is a much better player any way you look at it. if you notice, all the ipod love is saying "because it is better" or "it is cool" and dont really support their claim. the Zune marketplace is Much easier to use than itunes and now their music is 80% DRM free so once you get your music you can use is wherever you want unlike anything you buy on itunes. plus the music is in higher quality (when compairing bitrates)

  you just cant go wrong with the Zunes. Dont be a sheep and buy an ipod because there really is no logical reasoning in getting one.

  iPods don't work very well. The 30Gb iPod videos fail more than 20% of the time. Their batteries suck and they aren't built for quality. Apple is being sued because there are so many unhappy owners of them.

  Zune is way better and is only gonna get better.

  Dont get a zune. As BOTH a zune AND ipod owner, I have experience with both

  1. Battery Life
  -Microsoft promised 30 hours audio only w/ wi-fi off. Cnet.com published results that attained 22 hours, roughly half that of an ipod classic 80 gb. I have actually tested this and I can say that cnet.com is correct

  2. Got rid of the equalizer
  -The zune 30 had a music equalizer and im pissed that microsoft got rid of it. Without a equalizer, your songs wont sound as good

  3. Microsft (ms) points
  -79 ms points=99 cents for a song. Thats confusing

  4. Online store availability
  -No movies or tv shows. Song selection half that of itunes. This is more important than you think

  5. Exclusive online store
  - Can't use other music services like napster, yahoo, rhapsody, etc. The thing that pisses me off is that these services are MICROSOFT BACKED!

  6. Hard Drive
  -Can't be used as an external hard-drive (complaint in the 1st generation, Microsoft didn't address this problem). Almost EVERY mp3 player has this feature

  7. No clock
  -This is more important than you think (Same as above)

  8. No games
  - This isn't really important, but the ipod has the upper hand on this one

  9. Screen Resolution

Okay, everywhere its the battle of the Zune vs. iPod, I need a new MP3 BADLY and i have no clue where to begin. I currently have the pink iPod nano (the little square one...third gen. (When i put plug in my iPod to another computer everything gets so screwed up). I also heard that if you have a friend that has a zune, you can take some of their music/give them some of your own. (Is this true? Can something really be that easy to sync up?!)
I have used the iPod/iTunes my whole life, and I don't want to have to re-buy all the songs i currently have.   1) You can either use the Zune Pass which is a per month music subscription. You get to download as much music as you want but it stops playing at the end of the month. You can keep 10 songs per month. The Zune Pass is optional.
  2) Buy each song individually. The prices are similar to Amazon and iTunes. The songs are paid using Microsoft points. One Microsoft point is 1.25 cents. The points can be bought with gift cards.

  Zunes can be synced with multiple computers (they have to have the Zune software installed). The first computer you sync it to will become the home computer. Every computer after that will sync as a guest. I take songs from my brothers laptop all the time without any fuss.

  You can download CDs onto the Zune. Ripping them using the software is very easy.

The thing I hate about both of these players is that I can't upload my own home movies. I have to convert them to something else. This is to prevent piracy but it's a pain in the arse.   i have had both the zune and the ipod. i have the ipod the third generation nano and the 30GB zune.

  i can't tell you how frustrated with the zune right now. there's this issue. an error code called C00D124D that is so annoying. look it up on google. that happened yesterday. as i tried to fix it this morning, that error code didn't show up. at first i was relieved. i unplugged my zune and started to play my songs and then.. It says " The item is missing or can't be played . " And as it says that it begins a never ending scroll through all of my songs in a shuffle pattern.

  i've been searching through forums for the past few hours and there are many people who have this "issue" with the 30GB. also, a few people have said that this has been going on awhile and they've kept on asking microsoft to fix this bug, but they don't know how. my warranty is out of the question since i got mine on black friday last year. if you want a zune, i suggest you look up if there are any people who are dissatisfied with the 180GB, 30GB, etc.

  other than that, i prefer the ipod. i really want an ipod touch, i've read so many great reviews. the ipod is really worth buying no matter how much the GB.

  Don't listen to the above guy. It's obviously most people like him have never used a Zune so they don't know what the heck they're talking about. (Some people are even low to claim they did, when they didn't).

  It depends on which type of iPod or Zune you want to talk about. For simplicity, I'll just list the ones for the iPod Touch and the Zune HD.

  iPod Touch Pros:

  1. Lots of applications to download
  2. Lots of 3rd party support
  3. Built-in camera

  iPod Touch Cons:
  1. Audio quality and video quality is not as good
  2. Almost too common, and not anything unique
  3. More expensive than most portable media players, in terms of price per gigabyte

  Zune HD Pros:
  1. Well designed and impressive hardware
  2. Superb media experience
  3. Overall better software experience on both device and computer

  Zune HD Cons:
  1. Not a lot of 3rd party support
  2. Limited amount of applications
  3. Less brand awareness

  Overall though, I would recommend the Zune HD. It's by far the best portable media playing experience you can get, better than the way the iPod Touch plays media. The OLED screen, superb audio, simple interface, and such really still outdo the iPod. All those fancy apps and such the Touch has can be done on your computer or your phone if you cared that much.

  I've had my Zune since January and have had no problems with it that weren't easily solved. You cannot use it with WMP without a hack. In my opinion it is very easy to put music, videos, and pictures on it. I've never had an iPod so I can't compare the two. I would suggest reading the specs of both as well as reviews then deciding which one meets your needs.

  I personally think the Zune is a better deal and has more flexability then the iPod. With an iPod you buy the ridiculously expensive song, and it's yours to do what you please with. With Zune, you pay a month and get unlimited downloads to your Zune and get to listen to the full songs at anytime. Also you can purchase the songs with Microsoft points and you can do whatever you please with the song like with iTunes. Right now Zune is giving away 10 free songs a month, so it's a really great deal. Plus the new Zune HD is comming out with web, radio, and HD capabilities.

  I bought a zune after I got my ipod stolen and I have not found anything I cant do on and ipod. While there is no data file to read text on a zune u can use jpegbook. Plus on a zune you get radio and you can wireless sync and share songs. Finally if you use iTunes you pay 99 cents per song while zune marketplace costs only 79 cents per song. Although it does not say it in the manual zune also supports .mov files (quicktime). Personally, I can't ever see myself using an ipod again.

  I don't know much about Zune. and No.. iPod doesnt have better movie quality than Zune... Both same quality except for the Zune you have widescreen.
  For the interface, Zune is much better because you can set pictures as wallpaper.

  Generally when you first bought your Zune you need to charge it first for (ask the dealer) hours. usually 3 hours for Zune type of gadget.

  iPod includes calender, games(downloable via iTunes), contacts notes etc)

  Zune don't... but they have fancy FM tuner though. -- and also WIFI

  Yes you can put Youtube videos into your Zune (this is barely legal for some videos) just like the iPod you need a good/right video converter to convert Youtube Videos > Zune Videos.

  1. Creative Zen Vision:M (I have nothing against the others, but I love my Creative. iPods break too much and only let you use iTunes. Zune is really big and isn't all that great. Between iPod and Zune, I'd go with Zune.) iRiver Clix is another cool mp3 player.

The ipod is over priced and under featured.The radio comes in handy when you are tired of your own music and want to hear something else.The Zune can be used on multiple computers and you can use subscription music or Limewire.The experts rate Zune for ease of use and portability. OK, I have an Ipod video 80g that I bought sometime prior to the release of the new Ipod video 80gb that is now concidered the Ipod Classic.   thats great! you have a lot of videos! me too! i got the 30gb Microsoft Zune and i also got the 30gb Apple iPod (both got it last year). a few weeks ago, i just got the iPod Touch. when i ask the clerk in Apple store, they say i need a new cable for watching videos over the tv. there are two cables, the component or the composite. both of them are pinn-type so they have to be connected to the bottom of the iPod. now with regards to the new Microsoft Zune, i am still have not figure out how to output the video to the tv. i was browsing some cables for the Zune, no video cable found for the new Zune. so meaning to say its the same video cable you will be using for the old Zune (similar the video cable for the 30gb iPod Video).

Well, I wasn't sure if they'd hold the same since the ipod touch has more apps.

  The iPod Touch 32 GB will hold basically the same amount as a 32 GB Zune... totally crazy right?! If there's a difference, it would only be like 10mb difference.

  If you want audio quality and just a media player, go with a Zune. Zune also has better video quality. The battery life is FAR superior.

  If you want to try out a bunch of apps/games/internet, but lose audio/video quality, get an iPod Touch.

Zune HD Vs Ipod Touch 4G? (strictly Media Experience comparison)?
I know this question has been asked in one form or other, but let me put a disclaimer first so we don't go off-base - I've owned an iPod Touch (2nd Gen) for a couple years so i know all about the variety of apps on the ipod touch/iphone and on the Touch 4th gen, it actually has a camera too unlike the Zune HD- but I have a smartphone with those features so I don't really care for that on my media player - I'm more interested in my media experience. I recently lost my iPod touch and my choices for replacement are another ipod Touch (4th Gen) and Zune HD. This is the first time I'm even considering a microsoft product for my entertainment but I'd like to hear thoughts on the actual music (and pod-cast, radio, audio-book) experience on the Zune HD vs the iPod touch, preferably from someone who's used both. I used the "Genius" feature a lot on the iPod to generate my songlists, heard the Zune has a similar feature called "Smart-DJ" - how well does it compare? I had a chance to play with a zune HD at a bestbuy and was blown away by the GUI, but I'd like to know just how much of a competitor it is to the iPod (media-wise). Also, I listen to podcasts a lot, I heard the zune is abit annoying when dealing with podcasts - anyone have any thoughts on this?
PS - Also need to know how well the Zune deals with AudioBooks - I heard it doesnt differentiate between audiobooks and other music files?

  Get the Zune HD for a superior media experience. Most tech reviewers will tell you the Zune has the better, more focused media capabilities. You can output full HD to t.v.'s (something the touch won't and probably won't ever be able to do.) Having both the iTunes and Zune software, I can say the Zune software handles podcasts just fine, even better than iTunes. Also, the Zune HD does have apps, albeit there are just a handful, compared to Apple's store. The Smart-DJ function also blows the so called Genius function out of the water.

  I am slightly biased towards the Zune here, but I do own a Zune 80, and an older generation ipod nano. So I have both iTunes and Zune software.

  on the contrary....music file sound totally different on my zune HD than they do on my touch...the zune HD is very detailed and crisp, while the touch seems very washed out and heavy on the bass and treble.

  itunes music is coded at 256kbps, zune music is encoded at 320kbps, so zune music has the edge right there.

  if you are a music lover, get the HD....the touch will disappoint you greatly if you get it for mainly music. the HD lets you find new artists quickly and easily, plus /month gets you UNLIMITED music downloads.

Okay, everywhere its the battle of the Zune vs. iPod, I need a new MP3 BADLY and i have no clue where to begin. I currently have the pink iPod nano (the little square one...third gen. I think) and the computer I originally had it synced up to is now gone, and I got a new laptop (yay!) But when I went to sync it up to my laptop, only the purchased items showed up and it says that if i re-sync it, i will loose everything that wasn't purchased from the iTunes store (which sucks...badly). I have only bought a few things from the iTunes store, and the majority of my iPod is the CDs i download. I have moved from the house where the original computer is (and the CDs are back there as well), so...im screwed on that.
I have heard that with the Zune, you don't have a limit to the number of computers you can sync it up to, and it will sync up easily. (When i put plug in my iPod to another computer everything gets so screwed up). I also heard that if you have a friend that has a zune, you can take some of their music/give them some of your own. (Is this true? Can something really be that easy to sync up?!)
I have used the iPod/iTunes my whole life, and I don't want to have to re-buy all the songs i currently have. (I also don't understand the whole Zune Marketplace/Microsoft Points thing, can someone explain please? Thanks!). The majority of my iPod at the moment is music. Videos are nice, but I don't really watch them on the iPod, i mainly listen to audiobooks/podcasts/music.
Right now I am looking at the Zune HD and the iPod Touch. I like that the Zune HD is cheaper (but when you add the whole zune pass price every month, 0.00 is a lot to spend for a yr) Do you have to buy the Zune Pass?   There are two ways to get songs through the Zune Marketplace.
  1) You can either use the Zune Pass which is a per month music subscription. You get to download as much music as you want but it stops playing at the end of the month. You can keep 10 songs per month. The Zune Pass is optional.
  2) Buy each song individually. The prices are similar to Amazon and iTunes. The songs are paid using Microsoft points. One Microsoft point is 1.25 cents. The points can be bought with gift cards.

  Zunes can be synced with multiple computers (they have to have the Zune software installed). The first computer you sync it to will become the home computer. Every computer after that will sync as a guest. I take songs from my brothers laptop all the time without any fuss.

  You can download CDs onto the Zune. Ripping them using the software is very easy.

  Ok first of all it depends of what do u want to do with it...if you want to play 'all day long' u want an ipod touch , but if u like to play some times zune will do the trick for u because of what i heard the new Zune HD processor and The nVidia card will have the games that iTouch doesnt....
  Next the price will surely be almost the same but I guarantee u that in most of the places u will find the Zune HD a lot Cheaper than the iTouch (16g Zune HD: around 9....32g around 0)...

  And for the technical issues, I have a zune myself and its an old 30 g version (1gen) I will tell u that I didn't have any issues with it at all...I know that the 2gen zune had some issues, but I can surely tell u that with the new Zune HD will come a major software update that will fix all the bugs (if they exist)....

  For me, I'm buying the new Zune HD when it comes out in September because I already had a zune and I'm really satisfied with it and I like the zune's software more than the IPods and finally the Zune HD design attracts me more than the bubbly iTouch's one...so in the end its your descision and I'm glad if myopinion helped to decide. =)

  We have a Zune HD 16GB and iPod touch 4G 32GB. If you want a lot of little apps (Apple has more than you can ever use), a camera, and decent playback then go with the iPod. If you want awesome media management and great playback, get the Zune.

  I use only my Zune HD nowadays.

  We first got the iTouch and spent on apps. I quickly became bored with the apps and my attention turned solely to music -- music is why I wanted an iPod in the first place. For me, iTunes has been the most frustrating music discovery, management and syncing application I think I have ever worked with -- and I'm using it on my iMac with Leopard. I actually became so frustrated with it one Friday evening I went to BestBuy and bought a Zune HD (I was on the bubble between the Touch and Zune HD anyway).

  The Zune HD is made for discovering and managing music and video. I wish I would have bought it a long time ago. I have never had a better sounding or looking player. The UI is gorgeous.

  If you get a Zune HD, you'll want a Zune Pass. Since early January, I've built a library of over 700 songs with Zune Pass that I can keep on my PC and my Zune as long as I have a subscription. SmartDJ is the best music discovery application I've ever used. Also with Zune Pass, every month I get to keep 10 songs for free forever -- that's 120 songs a year. There's no way I could afford this library with iTunes -- and it keeps growing -- I'll probably download another 50 or songs this weekend.

  The dock is awesome, too. I currently have it on my stereo, but I am thinking of getting one for the TV too (I already have Zune on my 360, but I may geek out anyway). Zune can sync wirelessly, too -- my songs, videos, podcasts, etc. I had to jack in the Touch.

  The Touch is neat, but not for me. I think the audio playback is as good as my much cheaper Sansa Clip+, but not the Zune HD. And if you want the camera and small apps, you won't get that with the Zune. Maybe you won't find iTunes as frustrating as I did, but it seems to be a common complaint. My son loves the Touch and prefers it over the Zune HD -- however, when he's doing homework he listens to my Zune HD in the dock. He's young and seems to really like using it as a game player.

  I like the Zune's UI and chassis a lot more, too -- dang sexy -- but, those aren't as important to me and playback and managing a large library of songs and videos. I do use the browser, FB, Twitter, MSN Money, and two games (hearts and sodoku) infrequently on my Zune (usually if I'm listening to music in bed) -- but those are nice-to-haves and not need-to-haves.

  With either, get the 32GB (I got the 16GB HD and wish I got the 32GB ... or even 64GB ... but now I'm strangely attached to my 16GB Zune ) and new ear buds. With the Zune, you can get custom art etched on it too ... I might spring for that later.

  We have the HD and Touch 4G.

  For music, the Zune HD ... for social networking apps, the Touch 4G (with front-facing camera for Skype). If I were you, I would take the ding on the sexier machine and better music and go with the Touch since it seems you want to use it for social networking first and music second.

  Our Touch never get's used (except as a portable game device by my son). My Zune HD get's a lot of use.

  The HD does have email, but for Hotmail only (though a new client is coming out from MobileMe, so maybe that will improve) -- and it does have decent Facebook and Twitter and Messenger, but only single account (no quick account switch). I use all 4 of these on the HD and they work fine for me (the keyboard is better than the Touch's), but I'm an intermittent social networker -- I feel like you may want apps with more features than the HD offers, since you listed social networking first. You may also want to network with mySpace, Linkedin, Youtube, etc.

  Of course the zune is gunna get more apps, it only has so few cuz it came out just last month. The zune has much better screen quality, sound quality is mostly the same (theres really no way you could tell a difference without some kind of robotic aid), and the zune is smaller. The zune also comes with HD radio that doesn't require you to be in a wifi hotspot like the ipod does. iPod has a moderately faster web browser, and comes with a speaker on the device unlike the zune which requires headphones. Basically, it depends on what you think looks better, and which company you support more: Microsoft=Zune, Apple=iPod. People usually say that the zune is overall (other than fewer apps, a slightly slower web browser, and the lack of a speaker) better device than the iPod.

  This is a very interesting question.

  If the interface is what you're most concerned with you might want to go with the Microsoft Zune HD. The transitions and menu screens are a lot more intuitive than that of the iPod Touch. The HD also doesn't cost as much as the Touch so take that into consideration. You've made a comment about the apps. All of the apps that will release for the Zune HD will be free so you won't have to worry about purchasing them. The only bad thing is the wait.

  Here are some bad things about the Zune HD. Internet is very slow. You probably won't find too many in stores so you may end up having to buy one online. The quality is better than that of the iPod Touch but it sort of lacks in features. Overall it's a pretty good device.

  If you're really big into apps you may want to wait a while before you think about purchasing a Zune HD because you have to wait a while for new apps to appear in the Marketplace.

Well the cats out of the bag on pricing. I was hoping for even pricing then I may have sided with apple. It was announced that there will be a 8gb Itouch for 0 while the Zune HD 16gb is 0. It doesn't take a scientist to account for the big upgrade of space for such a small price.

The price is what sold me on the zune. I am just cheap like that lol. Granted the ipod touch has a bigger screen, lots of apps, and a extremely solid back round being its 3rd generation.

What it really boils down to is how many songs and videos I can hold at a time. And the zune is double the ipod's so its the winner here. I am taking a gamble though. The zune is new, it looks promising. I will be impressed no matter what its better than my 4 year old sandisk. But theres a chance I will be getting a inferior product. Anyways

  Well, I think you should, because it has better audio and video quality. Better audio has been since the 2nd generation came out, and better video lies in the fact that it has an OLED screen, which is better than the LCD that Itouch has.

  I recommend the ZuneHD over Itouch from personal experience, it has better quality to everything, from using both my 16 gb Itouch and ZuneHD but remember if you want apps and videos, stick with touch, better quality everything and HD radio, ZuneHD, though new 3rd party apps, may make youtube possible in the near future. 3rd Party apps ( about 100-150) are alot for the ZuneHD though minute to Itouch's app collection.

  IMO the zune HD is built better, has much better sound quality, a much better screen, it is super easy to use...it uses words instead of symbols for everything, the software is really great and much better than itunes IMO.

  the only thing the touch has on the HD is the number of apps and a slightly better browser.

  and amazon has 16GB zuneHD's for 0 which is what the 8gb touch goes for on the same site..so you get 2X more storage for the money. zune also has 32GB for 4 and 64GB for 0

  Well now that we know there isn't much Apple is releasing for the itouch,The Camera and Mic thing never happened. That is why I am going to get the Zune, since it has a clear win over itouch in functions.   In my opinion, iPod touches get really boring really fast. Even though they have a lot of accessories, they're not as great as they seem to be. Sure you can have a lot of apps and whatnot on them, but in the end they end up costing you a fortune! And another thing that's annoying is that the mirror-type back to it gets scratched up/dirty very easily. That's just my opinion though.   I wouldnt say the screen is any brighter...but i would say the colors are more vibrant...there was no motion blurr at all...the picture was amazingly crisp and clear...and if i hadn't already known the screen itself was not HD resolution, i definately wouldnt have known that looking at it....it looks that good. the contrast on the screen BLOWS away regular LCD creens.....the dark scenes in the video i saw was easy to see...even in a bright room. it was absolutely beautiful...sure its a little smaller overall, but the 16:9 aspect ratio worked great for the videos and they filled the entire 3.3" screen unlike in the ipod thouch.

  the zune is the better music and video player (haha nyla, the screen is nearly the same width as the touch just not as high when viewing in landscape so videos are the same size...OLED blows away the touch's screen)

YouTube ipod app fail?
Okay, so I realized that the YouTube app on my iPod comes up with every video result, except for the actual music videos by the bands. If I look up a video from a band, all I get is a crap load of sucky covers, and not the actual vid I want. And it even applies with things other than music. It comes up with every result other than what I want (for the most part). What's the deal?

  Apple is blocking all of the music videos because they want you to have to download them from the Itunes store. If everyone could just watch the music videos on youtube through their ipods, then why would you buy it from itunes is probably what apple is thinking.

  I know it really stinks but apple is greedy that way.

But where does an absolute beginner start to dabble and experiment to see if they learn how to write a simple iPhone app without going to college for 4 years. Do you have to take beginning programming classes to learn? And what are the best books and resources to get started?

I personally don't know any software engineers to brainstorm with, so any advice from experienced programmers who could offer some help and advice is really appreciated. Thanks.

  No the touch screen on the new iPod nano was just a gimmick to make people want to buy it and a reason to raise the price. The new iPod nano is fairly useless for anything other than being a stylish music player for a limited music library. Maybe if you somehow jailbroke it you could have apps but that would void your warranty and I don't think it is possible yet.

  1) Go preferences>Advanced on iTunes. Make sure "keep iTunes folder organized is checked."
  2) Note the folder location of the iTunes media folder, and go find it.
  3) Find the Mobile Applications folder inside that
  4) Copy this folder to a flash drive or some other storage medium. The folder might be quite large, depending on how many apps you have. Mine is 8.4 GB with about 350 applications.
  5) Make sure iTunes is installed on the new computer.
  6) Plug flash drive into new computer.
  7) In iTunes, go File>Add to Library. Navigate to your flash drive and select all the contents of that folder.

  Now all your Apps are on the new computer. Unfortunately, the App data (such as saved games) will not make it.

It should transfer your purchases made from your iTunes account bak onto your computer then you could just reload them onto your iPod. I can't guarantee this will work but I hope it helped. And incae it happens again you should transfer your purchases to your computer after buying a couple just so you have them if your iPod deletes them again.

  Try this. Switch off your PC first. Connect the Nano to your other USB port(s) and try again. Sometimes USB ports malfunction for a small period of time probably due to electrical deviations.

I have also read that some of the iPhone apps were not written by professional software programmers that spent 4 years in college, obtaining a degree in computer software engineering. Some of the best apps were written from self taught hobbyist programmers and actually wrote and sold some of their apps for a lot of money.

But where does an absolute beginner start to dabble and experiment to see if they learn how to write a simple iPhone app without going to college for 4 years. Do you have to take beginning programming classes to learn? And what are the best books and resources to get started?

  If you want to build some apps for the Apple App store you need to go the the Apple web site and sign up for the Apple SDK or whatever they call it. The Apple development kit. I think it only works on Macs, I'm not sure. Anyways it costs to signup and get the kit. Apple kits 30% of the buy it price. Not bad.

  Newton's Cradle is a cool app. Remote is a necessity for controlling your iTunes over the network. also, DigiDrummer Lite is a cool, free drum pad. iTick is a good Metronome if you need that. shazam is great (it identifies the song that is playing if you hold the mic up to speakers. the pacman demo is fun.   No the touch screen on the new iPod nano was just a gimmick to make people want to buy it and a reason to raise the price. The new iPod nano is fairly useless for anything other than being a stylish music player for a limited music library. Maybe if you somehow jailbroke it you could have apps but that would void your warranty and I don't think it is possible yet.

  Try plugging your iPod into iTunes then right click your iPod tab then click transfe purchases. It should transfer your purchases made from your iTunes account bak onto your computer then you could just reload them onto your iPod. I can't guarantee this will work but I hope it helped. And incae it happens again you should transfer your purchases to your computer after buying a couple just so you have them if your iPod deletes them again.

  1) Go preferences>Advanced on iTunes. Make sure "keep iTunes folder organized is checked."
  2) Note the folder location of the iTunes media folder, and go find it.
  3) Find the Mobile Applications folder inside that
  4) Copy this folder to a flash drive or some other storage medium. The folder might be quite large, depending on how many apps you have. Mine is 8.4 GB with about 350 applications.
  5) Make sure iTunes is installed on the new computer.
  6) Plug flash drive into new computer.
  7) In iTunes, go File>Add to Library. Navigate to your flash drive and select all the contents of that folder.

  Now all your Apps are on the new computer. Unfortunately, the App data (such as saved games) will not make it.

  If you know another programming language, such as C++ or Java, you could probably do it in 2 -3 months or so.

If you want to learn to program you will need to look that up seperately, i do a little, so i can tell you, learning programming is a like a language. once you learn one it is similar to others. such as spanish is to portugese. So once you learn programming, you can download the application maker or SDK (software development kit) fromn the respective company and start programming applications for them.

  As for the games and app, well, most chat apps are free so facebook and the works like skype, msn, Y!Messenger and all are free. I have an app called Justin.tv, it is sweeeeet
